Reprieve for Julian Assange; UK Court rules that Assange's extradition to US can be appealed
- Updated Monday May 20 2024
WikiLeaks founder, the infamous Julian Assange has been given permission to appeal against his extradition to the US. The 52 year old born in Townsville City, Australia had been under asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for a number of years up to 2019, and was later imprisoned in the UK.
WikiLeaks website gained international recognition when in 2010 sensitive video footage of US airstrikes in Baghdad, war logs of Afghanistan and Iraq among other US millitary and diplomatic cables were published.
Assange has been battling the demand for extradition to the United States where he faces the serious charges of espionage.
In December 2021 a high court ruled in favor of the US allowing Assange to be extradited. This was appealed by Assanges legal team in a last ditch attempt in February 2024. Now it seems that this effort has been succesful as the appeal has been allowed. Further developments are awaited as the situation is fluid.
Assange has won several awards for journalism and continues to have a credible standing in the media and journalistic communities.
